BANGALORE: Is the government trying to make peace with the Lokayukta so that he doesn't probe the land denotification scam involving chief minister B S Yedyurappa's children? It appears the CM would rather take his chances with the Justice Padmaraj Commission.
On Wednesday, the government dispatched a letter from Yeddyurappa to his party colleagues to show restraint while commenting on the Lokayukta.
On Thursday, chief secretary S V Ranganath wrote a letter seeking suggestions from the Lokayukta to make amends for the government's mistakes while issuing notification in setting up the Justice Padmaraj panel.
On Wednesday, the Lokayukta office received a copy of the CM's letter admonishing certain legislators who vented their ire against Lokayukta Santhosh Hegde.
Legislators Nadish Reddy, Suresh Gowda and Sathish Reddy had convened a press conference and accused the anti-graft organization's head of going easy on opposition parties like JD(S) and Congress. In his letter, Yeddyurappa also praised the Lokayukta was for doing good work.
On Thursday, Ranganath's letter also states the government is ready to make amends as suggested by the Lokayukta.
The government has not responded to the Lokayukta's letter on Nov. 21, asking it to hand over records pertaining to its denotification of land. Instead, he received a letter from the DPAR deputy secretary seeking an explanation on the status of seven other cases referred to the Lokayukta by the government.
Justice Santosh Hegde said he had received the two letters but didn't want to comment. "I heard there was a PIL filed in the high court. When the matter is before the court, let the court decide who should conduct the investigation," he said.
